The Journey So Far
My photography adventure kicked off in sunny Puerto Rico. Back then, it was more of a hobby—I mean, it’s tough to run a booming photography business when you’re constantly on deployment duty, right? But I’d sneak in photo sessions for friends and family whenever I could. Those early days were like planting seeds, waiting for them to bloom.
Fast-forward to 2015 when I retired. Boom! Suddenly, I had all this time on my hands. And guess what? I knew—I just knew—that photography was my forever path. So, off I went to a local art school, snagging my BFA in Digital Photography. 📷 But that wasn’t enough—I hungered for knowledge like a camera craves light. Next stop: community college for an entrepreneurship and business certificate. Yep, I was stacking up those college credits like a pro.
From Pretty Pictures to Powerful Stories
Somewhere along the way, my perspective shifted. It wasn’t just about pretty pictures anymore. Nope. It was about storytelling—the kind that tugs at your heartstrings and whispers secrets. At a photography conference, a husband-and-wife duo shared a gut-punching story. Their sister had passed away just days after a casual family gathering. Luckily, they snapped an impromptu family photo that day—the last one with her. That hit home for me. Hard.
Then came my own wake-up call. Maternity photoshoot. My goal? Pretty portfolio material. But life had other plans. Three weeks later, that young expectant mother went into labor, and her baby didn’t make it. My heart shattered. I attended the baby’s wake, soul-searching in overdrive. And you know what? By being there, I became part of their family. My goals had been shortsighted, but somehow, I left a lasting impression. I became Uncle Josh.
